Flashback to 2021, the powerful trio of Voice of Baceprot (VoB) —Marsya on guitar and vocals, Widi on bass, and Sitti on drums— found themselves reflecting on the deep connection between humans and nature. They began to dig into the reality that our actions as humans have become the driving force behind the damage to our environment.
This harsh truth forced them to confront a painful question: “What can we, as humans, do to stop being the ones who are wrecking it all?”
With that question lingering, VoB returned to conversations they’d had, and the books they’d stumbled upon, letting their worries pour into a new song called “Mighty Island”. The title might sound peaceful, but the message bites with satire.
With the distorted guitars swelling, the lyrics call out humankind as the ones responsible for destroying what was once a vibrant, life-sustaining ecosystem. There’s a part where Marsya draws on a Sundanese proverb—there’s anger and fear laced into it, a deep worry for what’s to come.
As the song heads towards its close, we hear the Sundanese language woven into the lyrics—a tender reminder that once upon a time, we cared for this planet, treated it with respect and love.
Mighty Island paints a raw picture of what’s happening to the earth: the forests we’ve torn down, the oceans we’ve polluted, the animals we’ve driven to the brink, and the reckless way we’re pushing the planet into crisis.
VoB explains that they chose the word Island in the title as a symbol of the bitter truth—that this once beautiful, strong Earth, full of life, is now being stripped away by the greed of the powerful and the blind indifference of society, with ruthless corporations stomping all over environmental protections in the name of profit.
Ahead of the official release, VoB has dropped a lyric video on their YouTube channel, an early step to help spread their message even further.
“We did this to shout our concerns louder,” Marsya says. “We see this as a way of reclaiming a space for our art, a home for our voices.”
“We know that raising awareness—like so many others have tried to do—about the need for real action to protect the environment is a long, tough road. But even in the midst of growing anxiety, we’re trying to hold on to hope. Maybe this song can spark something, inspire people not to stop at just realizing what’s wrong but to actually do something about it. Maybe it can encourage people to take real steps to save the earth and our future,” she adds.
So, for VoB, Mighty Island is a wake-up call. A reminder that we, as humans, are responsible for protecting this planet so that it can thrive for generations to come.
“We hope this song stirs something, awakens some sense before it’s really too late,” Widi says.
“Take this song as a small token, proof that the earth and its people were here,” Sitti closes.
